- Seizure, Parkinson’s, migraine-prevention and neuropathic-pain medicines are not interchangeable even when one ingredient has several uses.

How the medicine groups differ
- Antiseizure medicine: valproic acid may control selected seizure types and has other specialist uses, but carries major pregnancy-related risks.

- Migraine prevention and neuropathic pain: propranolol may be used to prevent migraine, while duloxetine may be used for selected neuropathic pain conditions.

Important safety checks
Pregnancy planning is critical with valproate: it is restricted because exposure during pregnancy can cause congenital malformations and developmental harm. Kidney or liver function, mood changes, falls, driving safety and interactions may also need review, depending on the medicine.

Call emergency services for a first, prolonged or repeated seizure without recovery; new facial droop, limb weakness or speech difficulty; a sudden severe headache; severe confusion; or thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
