Carbidopa
Carbidopa is used with levodopa in Parkinson’s disease. It has little useful antiparkinsonian effect alone but allows more levodopa to reach the brain and reduces some peripheral adverse effects.

How it works
Carbidopa blocks conversion of levodopa to dopamine outside the brain. This increases levodopa delivery to the brain and reduces peripheral nausea and cardiovascular effects.

The exact combination, release form, meal timing and other Parkinson’s medicines require review. Treatment can cause involuntary movements, low blood pressure, hallucinations, sudden sleepiness and impulse-control changes. Do not stop the combination abruptly.

Seek urgent help for fever with severe stiffness or confusion, collapse, a sudden sleep episode that causes danger, severe hallucinations, chest pain, vomiting blood or suicidal intent.
