Amantadine
Amantadine is used for selected symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and some medicine-induced movement disorders. Formulations may release the medicine differently and are not automatically interchangeable.
Key points
- Kidney function strongly affects amantadine exposure and the risk of confusion or hallucinations.
- Do not stop it suddenly without guidance because Parkinsonian symptoms or severe reactions can worsen.
- New hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, seizures or extreme sleepiness needs urgent assessment.
Listings are for comparison and general information; suitability and supply depend on the neurological indication, clinician and pharmacy checks and prescription requirements.
Important safety checks
Kidney function, seizures, heart failure or swelling, glaucoma, mental health and other sedating medicines require review. Sudden sleep episodes and impulse-control changes should be reported.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for suicidal intent, severe confusion, hallucinations with unsafe behaviour, seizures, inability to wake, breathing difficulty or a severe worsening after abrupt interruption.
