What Divalproex is used for

Divalproex may be used for selected forms of epilepsy or acute mania associated with bipolar disorder. It is not suitable for every seizure type or mood presentation.

How it works

Valproate increases inhibitory GABA signalling and affects sodium and calcium channels, stabilising abnormal neuronal activity.

Important safety checks

Pregnancy or pregnancy potential, liver or mitochondrial disease, pancreatitis history, blood disorders and interacting medicines require specialist review. Blood counts and liver tests may be monitored. Do not stop suddenly, as seizures or mood symptoms can worsen.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain with repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, unusual bleeding, marked drowsiness or confusion, facial swelling, a painful blistering rash, suicidal intent or a prolonged or repeated seizure.
