What is levodopa used for?
Levodopa is used for Parkinson's disease. It is usually given with another medicine that helps more of it reach the brain (a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor).
How does levodopa work?
Levodopa is a precursor to dopamine that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Carbidopa prevents peripheral metabolism of levodopa, which increases the amount available for conversion to dopamine in the brain.

Levodopa can interact with antipsychotics, iron supplements and antihypertensives. Non-selective MAO inhibitors should not be used at the same time.
