Patient summary

Finasteride 1mg and 5mg film-coated tablets, used in the management of androgenetic alopecia. A specific inhibitor of type II 5-alpha reductase.

Mechanism of action

Finasteride is a competitive and specific inhibitor of type II 5-alpha reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone into the more potent 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Reducing DHT levels stops further hair loss.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Absolutely contraindicated; may cause abnormalities of male genital organs in fetus. Breastfeeding: No data.

Propecia is the brand name of finasteride, a treatment for Androgenetic Alopecia. The same active ingredient is also sold as Finpecia, supplied as a tablet in strengths of 1mg and 5mg. This medication is widely recognised for its role in managing hair loss in men.

Buying Propecia online

For expats and residents throughout the region, generic finasteride, much of it made in India, is far more affordable than the original brand.

Is Propecia from SGMeds the original brand?

No. SGMeds ships a generic with the same active ingredient (finasteride) at the strength you choose, not the original Propecia made by Organon. We use the brand name so you can find the medicine, and the generic's manufacturer varies with stock.

What is the price of Propecia in Singapore dollars?

Propecia comes in 1 and 5mg strengths, in packs of 10 to 120 tablets. Each option's price is shown on this page in Singapore dollars, converted from US dollars, so the exchange rate can change the final amount. Larger packs work out cheaper per tablet.

What you will receive

Propecia is the originator brand name, made by Organon. We use it here to identify the medicine only; we are not affiliated with Organon and do not ship the original Propecia.

  • You receive a generic equivalent: the same active ingredient (Finasteride) at the same dose, mostly recognised Indian branded generics from vetted manufacturers.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock at the dispatching warehouse.
  • A regulated generic matches the original ingredient for ingredient by legal standard.

Are all generics really the same? Read the honest answer.
