Tamsulosin
Tamsulosin relaxes smooth muscle around the prostate and bladder outlet to ease symptoms from benign prostatic hyperplasia. It does not shrink the prostate or exclude cancer and infection.
Key points
- Tamsulosin may improve urine flow but can cause dizziness or fainting, especially after starting or restarting.
- Eye surgeons need to know about current or previous use before cataract or glaucoma surgery.
- Inability to urinate, severe lower-abdominal pain or a painful erection that does not subside needs urgent care.
Listings are for comparison only. Suitability and supply depend on clinician and pharmacy checks, stock, destination rules and prescription requirements.
How it works
Tamsulosin blocks alpha-1A receptors in prostate and bladder-neck smooth muscle, reducing resistance to urinary flow.
Important safety checks
Low blood pressure, fainting history, severe liver or kidney disease, erectile-dysfunction medicines and other alpha blockers require review. Stand up carefully until individual effects are known. Urinary symptoms and PSA or prostate assessment may still need follow-up.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for inability to urinate with severe lower-abdominal pain, fainting with injury, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a painful erection that does not subside.
