Key points

  • Rivaroxaban treatment differs between atrial fibrillation, acute clot treatment and prevention after selected procedures.
  • Stopping it without clinical advice can rapidly reduce clot protection.
  • Major bleeding may be internal and requires urgent assessment even when there is no visible wound.

Listings are for comparison only; suitability and supply depend on the diagnosed indication, prescription, kidney and interaction checks, and pharmacy review.

What rivaroxaban is used for

Uses may include stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It is not appropriate for every heart valve or clotting condition.

How it works

Rivaroxaban inhibits factor Xa, reducing thrombin generation and clot formation. Routine INR monitoring does not guide its effect, but clinical and laboratory review is still needed.

Important safety checks

Review kidney and liver function, previous bleeding, pregnancy, planned surgery or dental work, and all anticoagulants, antiplatelets, NSAIDs and interacting antifungal, antiviral or seizure medicines. Tell clinicians about rivaroxaban before procedures.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for vomiting or coughing blood, black stools, uncontrolled bleeding, severe headache, head injury, fainting, blood in urine, sudden weakness or speech difficulty, or extensive unexplained bruising.
