Key points

  • Eligibility depends on confirmed or strongly suspected COVID-19, symptom timing, risk factors and whether more suitable options are available.
  • Pregnancy and reproductive considerations require review before treatment because of potential effects on a developing fetus.
  • Worsening breathlessness, chest pain, confusion or blue-grey lips or skin needs urgent medical care.

Listings are for comparison only. Suitability and supply depend on clinician and pharmacy checks, stock, destination rules and prescription requirements.

What Molnupiravir is used for

Molnupiravir may be considered for selected adults with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at increased risk of progressing to severe illness. It is not used to prevent COVID-19 or to replace hospital treatment when severe disease is present.

How it works

After activation in the body, molnupiravir introduces copying errors into the virus’s genetic material, reducing its ability to replicate. Treatment is time-sensitive because viral replication is greatest early in illness.

Important safety checks

Pregnancy status, the possibility of pregnancy, reproductive plans, age, symptom onset and other treatment options need review. Do not share leftover capsules or use them for a later respiratory illness without a new assessment.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for worsening breathlessness, persistent chest pain, fainting, new confusion, inability to stay awake, blue-grey lips or skin, coughing blood or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
