Key takeaways

  • Symptoms overlap with influenza and other infections, so testing can guide treatment and precautions when it will change decisions.
  • Antivirals are time-sensitive and intended mainly for people at higher risk of progression, not every mild infection.
  • Medicine interactions, kidney or liver function and symptom onset determine whether a particular antiviral is safe and useful.

The listings below do not confirm infection or eligibility for treatment; current clinical guidance and individual risk need review.

Assessing severity and risk

Fever, sore throat, cough, fatigue, headache and loss of smell can occur. Breathing effort, oxygen level, hydration and alertness determine urgency. Older age, immune suppression and certain chronic conditions increase progression risk, while vaccination and prior infection modify but do not eliminate it.

Treatment roles

Rest, fluids and appropriate symptom relief are sufficient for many mild cases. Nirmatrelvir–ritonavir and other antivirals have specific timing, eligibility and interaction requirements; some medicines must be adjusted or make treatment unsuitable. Antibiotics do not treat SARS-CoV-2 unless a bacterial infection is also present.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency care for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, persistent chest pain, inability to stay awake or a substantial fall in oxygen saturation.
