Doxycycline
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic for selected infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It also has specific uses in acne and prevention of certain infections. Listed uses include Chlamydia trachomatis infection and respiratory tract infections.

How it works
Doxycycline binds to bacterial ribosomes and blocks protein production, limiting growth of susceptible organisms.
Important safety checks
Pregnancy, oesophageal disease, liver problems and other medicines require review. Take with adequate water and follow instructions about remaining upright. Antacids, iron, calcium and magnesium can reduce absorption. Isotretinoin can add to intracranial-pressure risk.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for severe headache with blurred or double vision, severe pain or difficulty swallowing, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, a painful blistering rash, yellow skin or eyes, or severe persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
