Cyproheptadine
Cyproheptadine is a first-generation antihistamine used for selected symptoms of allergic rhinitis or urticaria. It can cause substantial drowsiness and anticholinergic effects.

How it works
Cyproheptadine blocks histamine H1 receptors and also has antiserotonin and anticholinergic activity.
Important safety checks
Narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary or bowel obstruction, enlarged prostate, severe asthma symptoms and use of monoamine-oxidase inhibitors require review. Avoid alcohol and driving until individual alertness is known. Appetite or weight concerns should be assessed rather than treated without a clear indication.
When to seek urgent care
Use the prescribed emergency allergy plan and seek emergency help for tongue or throat swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, fainting or collapse. Severe agitation, confusion, hallucinations, high fever or inability to urinate also needs urgent assessment.
