Carbimazole

Carbimazole reduces thyroid-hormone production and is used for hyperthyroidism. It can rarely cause a dangerous fall in infection-fighting white blood cells.

Key points

  • Thyroid tests guide treatment because too much or too little antithyroid effect can cause harm.
  • Fever, sore throat or mouth ulcers can signal agranulocytosis and require an urgent blood count.
  • Yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain or a serious allergic reaction needs urgent assessment.

Listings are for comparison only. Suitability and supply depend on clinician and pharmacy checks, stock, destination rules and prescription requirements.

How it works

Carbimazole is converted to thiamazole, which blocks thyroid-peroxidase reactions needed to produce thyroid hormones.

Important safety checks

Pregnancy or pregnancy planning, breastfeeding, liver disease, previous blood-cell reactions and medicines that affect blood counts require review. Thyroid function and sometimes blood counts or liver tests are monitored. Do not ignore infection symptoms or change treatment without the thyroid team.

When to seek urgent care

Stop further doses and obtain urgent clinical advice and a blood count for fever, sore throat or mouth ulcers. Seek urgent help for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or extensive blistering rash.
