How it works

Buspirone acts mainly as a partial agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and also affects dopamine signalling. It is not a benzodiazepine and has a different onset and withdrawal profile.

Important safety checks

Liver or kidney impairment, pregnancy, recent monoamine-oxidase-inhibitor use and other serotonergic medicines require review. Alcohol and sedating medicines can worsen dizziness. Follow product instructions about grapefruit and avoid driving until individual effects are known.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for suicidal intent, severe agitation or confusion with sweating, fever, diarrhoea, tremor or muscle rigidity, fainting, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
