What Azithromycin is used for
It may be prescribed for selected bacterial infections, including some cases of bacterial pneumonia or skin infection. Diagnosis and antimicrobial guidance determine whether it is suitable.
How it works
Azithromycin binds to bacterial ribosomes and blocks protein production, limiting the growth of susceptible bacteria.
Important safety checks
Previous macrolide allergy, long-QT syndrome, low potassium or magnesium, liver disease and medicines that affect heart rhythm require review. Antacids and other medicines may alter use instructions. Complete the prescribed course unless a clinician changes it because of a serious reaction.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty, fainting or a sustained irregular heartbeat, yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, or watery or bloody diarrhoea with fever or weakness.
