Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath around nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. Damage disrupts the electrical signals nerves carry, producing a wide range of symptoms that vary greatly from person to person.

How is MS diagnosed?
History, neurological examination and MRI are central. Spinal-fluid or other tests may support the diagnosis and exclude mimics. Symptoms can include visual loss, numbness, weakness, imbalance and bladder dysfunction, but the pattern matters more than any one feature.
How does symptom treatment differ from disease treatment?
Baclofen may reduce spasticity but does not prevent relapses or new lesions. Disease-modifying therapies are selected separately according to MS type, activity and risk. Rehabilitation, bladder care and fatigue management may be equally important; see pain management for related symptom medicines.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency care for sudden one-sided weakness, speech difficulty, loss of consciousness, seizure, severe breathing or swallowing difficulty, or abrupt vision loss. New neurological symptoms with fever or rapidly worsening mobility need prompt clinical contact.
