Gut bacteria split sulfasalazine into sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid. These components contribute differently to bowel and systemic anti-inflammatory effects.
Blood counts and liver and kidney tests may be monitored. Sulfonamide or salicylate allergy, asthma, G6PD deficiency, pregnancy, fertility concerns and folate status require review. Maintain hydration and report infection or rash promptly.
Seek urgent help for fever or severe sore throat, unexplained bleeding, yellow skin or eyes, marked weakness, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a painful blistering or peeling rash.
