Hydroxycarbamide

How it works
Hydroxycarbamide inhibits DNA synthesis. In sickle cell disease it can increase fetal haemoglobin; in proliferative blood disorders it can reduce excessive cell production.

Blood counts are essential because treatment can cause anaemia, low white cells or low platelets. Pregnancy and contraception, kidney and liver function, infection risk and other cancer treatments require review. Capsules are cytotoxic and should not be opened or handled by another person without appropriate instructions.
