Glimepiride
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin release in type 2 diabetes. Hypoglycaemia is its most important immediate risk. Listed uses include type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Key points
- Skipped meals, alcohol, exercise changes or illness can alter low-glucose risk.
- Kidney or liver impairment and other diabetes medicines can increase exposure or hypoglycaemia.
- It does not treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Listings are for comparison only; suitability and supply depend on diabetes assessment, prescription, glucose monitoring and pharmacy checks.
Important safety checks
Review kidney and liver function, meal pattern, pregnancy, alcohol, prior hypoglycaemia and all glucose-lowering medicines. Carry and follow the agreed low-glucose plan.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for seizure, loss of consciousness, severe confusion or low glucose that does not respond to the action plan. Facial swelling or breathing difficulty also needs emergency care.
