Chlorpromazine is a first-generation antipsychotic used for selected psychiatric symptoms and, in some settings, severe nausea or persistent hiccups. It has substantial sedating, movement and blood-pressure effects.

How it works
Chlorpromazine blocks dopamine and several other receptors. This broad receptor activity contributes to both treatment effects and sedation, dry mouth, constipation and low blood pressure.

Review heart rhythm, fainting, glaucoma, urinary retention, Parkinsonism, seizures, liver disease, blood disorders, dementia, pregnancy and other sedatives or QT-prolonging medicines. Avoid alcohol.

Seek urgent help for fever with severe stiffness or confusion, fainting, a seizure, a new irregular heartbeat, severe constipation with abdominal swelling, suicidal thoughts, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
