Key points

  • Canagliflozin is for type 2 diabetes and is not a treatment for type 1 diabetes.
  • Illness, fasting, surgery, dehydration and reduced insulin can trigger ketoacidosis even when glucose is not very high.
  • Nausea with abdominal pain or rapid breathing, severe genital pain or a new serious foot problem needs urgent care.

Listings are for comparison only. Suitability and supply depend on clinician and pharmacy checks, stock, destination rules and prescription requirements.

How it works

Canagliflozin blocks SGLT2 in the kidneys, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing glucose and sodium excretion in urine.

Important safety checks

Kidney function, hydration, blood pressure, genital or urinary infections, foot disease, amputation risk, pregnancy and other diabetes medicines require review. The treating team should provide sick-day and perioperative instructions. Do not stop insulin or reduce it independently.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for nausea or vomiting with abdominal pain, deep or rapid breathing, unusual drowsiness or confusion; severe pain, redness or swelling around the genitals or perineum; inability to keep fluids down; or a new infected, blackened or severely painful foot wound.
