It may be used in respiratory tract disorders associated with viscid mucus to help clear secretions. It does not treat bacterial or viral infection itself.
Bromhexine changes the structure and production of airway mucus, reducing its viscosity and supporting mucus clearance.
The cause of a prolonged or recurrent cough should be assessed. Stomach-ulcer history, severe liver or kidney disease, pregnancy and use of cough suppressants require review. Stop and obtain advice if a new widespread rash or mucosal sores develop.
Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue-grey lips or skin, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, facial swelling or a painful blistering or peeling rash.
