Listings are for comparison and general information, not an oncology regimen; suitability and supply depend on specialist, clinician and pharmacy checks, exact-product instructions, monitoring and prescription requirements.
Abiraterone inhibits CYP17, an enzyme needed for androgen production in the testes, adrenal glands and prostate tumour tissue. Lower androgen levels can slow androgen-sensitive cancer, but enzyme inhibition can also alter steroid balance and cause high blood pressure, low potassium or fluid retention.
The oncology team reviews liver function, blood pressure, potassium, heart disease, swelling and interacting medicines. The companion corticosteroid should not be changed or stopped without specialist advice. Pregnancy-prevention and handling advice may apply because the medicine can harm a developing fetus.
Contact the treating team urgently for severe weakness, muscle twitching, a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, rapid swelling, breathing difficulty, jaundice, dark urine or severe abdominal pain. Acute illness or inability to take the companion steroid also needs prompt advice.
