Skin and Soft Tissue Infection

Skin and soft-tissue infection (SSTI) is a broad group that includes impetigo, cellulitis, abscess and deep tissue infection. Appearance, depth and systemic illness determine treatment.

Key takeaways

  • Spreading warmth and redness suggest cellulitis, while a tender fluctuant lump may be an abscess that needs drainage.
  • Wound exposure, purulence, immune status, severity and local resistance influence whether cultures or antibiotics are needed.
  • A resistant-organism label cannot be inferred from appearance; broad antibiotics are not automatically better.

Catalogue matches do not diagnose an SSTI or indicate an appropriate antibiotic, route or duration.

Why does an abscess need different care?

Pus collected in a cavity may not resolve with tablets alone. Examination or ultrasound can identify a drainable collection. Cellulitis without pus is treated differently from purulent infection, bites, water-exposed wounds or surgical infection.

When are specialist antibiotics used?

Linezolid has selected roles for susceptible gram-positive infections and important blood, nerve and interaction risks. It is not a default response to treatment failure. Culture results and source control guide care; see antibiotics.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent care for rapid spread, severe pain, fever, red streaking, facial or eye involvement, dark skin, numbness, confusion or systemic deterioration.
