How it differs from common acne
Lesions tend to be large, painful and grouped, often affecting the back, chest, shoulders, buttocks or face. Several nodules may join beneath the skin and heal with thick or depressed scars. Swabs or other tests may be needed when infection is suspected.
Treatment priorities
Care aims to stop new deep lesions, control inflammation and limit scarring. Oral isotretinoin is often considered by specialists, sometimes with other short-term treatment. It is not suitable during pregnancy and requires structured counselling and monitoring. Procedures may be considered for selected abscesses or scars.
