What is Kemadrin?

Kemadrin is a muscle-relaxing anticholinergic whose active ingredient is procyclidine. It is primarily used to reduce muscle stiffness and tremor associated with Parkinson’s disease and to treat drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions. The medication is FDA-approved, EMA-approved, and authorized for use in Singapore by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). It is available as a 5 mg oral pill.

Who Should Use Kemadrin?

  • Adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease experiencing rigidity or tremor.
  • Patients who develop acute Dystonia or parkinsonian symptoms after taking dopamine-blocking drugs (e.g., antipsychotics).
  • Individuals for whom other anticholinergic agents are unsuitable or ineffective.

How Does It Work?

Kemadrin blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system, reducing the over-activity of dopamine-blocking pathways that cause muscle rigidity. Think of it as smoothing the “gear shift” in the brain, allowing smoother movement. It does not have significant abuse potential, but caution is advised for patients with a history of Glaucoma or urinary retention.

Why Choose Kemadrin?

  • Proven efficacy for Parkinson-related muscle stiffness and drug-induced dystonia.
  • Consistent tablet strength (5 mg) simplifies dosing.
  • Generic alternatives contain the same active ingredient, offering cost savings while maintaining bioequivalence.

Dosage, Administration, Lifestyle and Dietary Recommendations

  • 5 mg taken orally once or twice daily, as directed by a healthcare professional.

How to Take

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  • Can be taken with or without food; consistency with meals reduces stomach upset.

  • If it’s been longer, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double up.

Overdose

  • Seek emergency care immediately.
  • Symptoms may include blurred vision, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, or confusion.

Special Populations

  • Elderly: Start at the lower end of the dosing range; monitor for confusion or urinary retention.
  • Renal or hepatic impairment: Dose adjustment may be required; consult a clinician.
  • Children: Not recommended unless specifically advised by a specialist.

Lifestyle & Diet

  • Avoid excessive alcohol, which can increase Drowsiness.
  • Grapefruit juice may raise blood levels; limit intake.
  • Stay hydrated; anticholinergics can cause dry mouth.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Use cautiously in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, or severe constipation.
  • May cause drowsiness; avoid operating heavy machinery until you know how you react.

Kemadrin

Started on 5mg Procyclidine for my tremors. It definitely calmed the tremors down. Like, 80% better. But seriously, the cottonmouth is unreal. I feel like I constantly need a drink. My pharmacist suggested hard candy, but that only helps for a minute. Is this dry mouth something that eventually goes away, or is this my life now? I'm so tired the first few hours after taking it, too. Gotta take it right before a nap. Anyone else feel like this?

Wong S. Kallang, Singapore

Been on Kemadrin for six months now to counteract the crazy dystonia from my main meds. It works perfectly for stopping those random muscle spasms and the restless legs. Huge relief. My "hack" is to split the 5mg pill and take half in the morning and half in the afternoon. Taking the whole thing at once makes me completely foggy headed for hours. Beware the constipation though-you absolutely must drink water like a camel and eat fiber. Skip the water, skip the week.

Maria G. Cebu City, Philippines

This 5mg Procyclidine pill is my savior for dyskinesia, but man oh man, the memory is shot. I literally forget what I ate for breakfast sometimes. It's frustrating, especially at work. I try to schedule all important meetings for the late afternoon when the initial sedative phase has worn off. If you are starting this, make sure you write down everything. Literally everything. It's not worth stopping because of the good it does for movement, but the cognitive decline is real.

Ahmad M. Penang, Malaysia

Just started using this (Kemadrin 5mg) a week ago. The initial side effects are tough. Extreme dizziness and blurred vision the first three days. I almost stopped, but my doctor insisted I push through the adjustment period. The good news is the horrible akathisia is almost gone. The restless feeling finally stopped. If you are a newbie, drink ginger tea and definitely don't drive the first week. It knocks you out cold so take it 30 mins before bed, seriously.

I've been on Procyclidine for three years and I can't live without it for controlling the terrible tremors. But the major drawback is sensitivity to heat. If I spend too much time outdoors in the Manila sun, I overheat so fast and get dizzy; I suspect it messes with how I regulate temperature. Long-term users, stay indoors during peak heat and carry electrolyte drinks. I learned that the hard way. It's a potent drug, treat it with respect.

Chris T. Manila, Philippines

The anti-cholinergic effects hit hard. The blurred vision is intermittent, which is annoying but manageable. The worst part for me is the occasional mental confusion, almost like mild delirium if I adjust the dose too quickly. I learned to minimize the confusion by making sure I take it with fatty food-yogurt or a spoonful of peanut butter helps slow the absorption. It completely clears up the muscular stiffness I get, so it's a keeper, but you need management strategies.

Dewi P. Surabaya, Indonesia

Complex relationship with Kemadrin 5mg. It totally stabilizes the horrible neck spasms I get, which is fantastic; I can actually hold a conversation without looking like I'm having a seizure. However, it seems to affect my mood. I feel oddly detached and flat sometimes. Not depressed, just... muted. My doctor says it's common. I try to balance it out by being extremely active physically. Don't miss a dose though, otherwise the stiffness returns with a vengeance.

Kenji S. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I started taking Procyclidine 5mg to combat the stiffness, but quickly found it also worked wonders for my insomnia! Seriously, I sleep like a baby now. Major plus. But the trade-off is the initial dose makes me feel slightly euphoric (almost too good) which is followed by a big energy crash around midday. I try to save anything requiring concentration for the evening. If you have an important daytime meeting, maybe skip the morning coffee-that combination is too much stimulation with this pill.
